Below is a list of the characters that appear in Super Smash Bros. 5. The game features 40 characters, giving the roster 40 more additions since the previous installment. There are 40 newcomers and 40 veterans, as well as 40 hidden characters.

Like the most recent installments in the series, the roster features third-party characters which have been carefully chosen from other series. Sonic and Megaman return Smash 4, while Bomberman enters the game as a newcomer.

Types of Characters[]

Super Smash Bros. 5 identifies fighters using three classes: Veterans, Newcomers, and Secret.

Veterans are characters who are returning from past game(s) in the series. While some veteran fighters have been tweaked here and there, most have remained the same from their previous iterations, possibly sporting a new alternate costume or design.

Newcomers are fighters that are new to the series. Newcomers can come from already existing franchises, while some create entirely new universes through their inclusion in the game.

Secret characters are fighters that must be unlocked through certain criteria before being used in battle. Most of these hidden characters have multiple ways of being unlocked, while a few only have one. Secret characters can be either veterans or newcomers, as the category acts as a way to sub-classify the former two.
